Use Of The Internet

Along with its many other services provided for the information and cultural enrichment of Gloucester's residents, the Sawyer Free Library makes possible free access to the world of electronic information through its Internet computers. These electronic resources are provided specifically for educational and informational purposes to supplement what is available from the Library's various other collections.

It should be noted that while much of the information available through the Internet may be considered to be reliable and of high quality, many sites represent only the opinions of the site providers and may misrepresent facts, be inaccurate or even encourage behavior that is illegal. The Library cannot be responsible for the quality or reliability of the information its patrons receive from its Internet resources. | top |

Children And The Internet

The Library is concerned about the well being of all of the children who make use of its resources. However, using the Internet may by its nature result in children accessing sites that are inappropriate for young people. Responsibility for a child's use of the Internet is solely that of the child's parents, guardians or care givers. Responsible adults are encouraged to talk with their children about using the Internet and what is proper and approved for them to access or communicate. The librarians will provide suggestions for materials to guide parents in these conversations.  | top |

Rules For Internet Access

To insure that as many patrons as possible may equitably use the limited Internet computers each day, the following rules shall be in effect.

1) Patrons wishing to use the Internet computers must sign in with the librarian at the circulation or reference desks. A librarian will assign a specific computer station for the patron to use; only the assigned computer may be used.

2) Public demand for use of the Internet is such that only one allotted thirty (30) minute time slot each day will be permitted. If unexpired time remains on the Internet computer to which a patron is assigned, she or he may use the remaining time plus their allotted thirty (30) minutes.

3) No more than one (1) person at a time can be at an Internet station to prevent noise and disruption to other patrons.

4) The number of Library staff is quite limited and assistance to patrons using the Internet may not always be available. As the Internet is a new and evolving tool, Library staff cannot guarantee that assistance can be provided in finding or using every site, search engine or program. It is the responsibility of each patron to access the information they are seeking.

5) Internet material may be downloaded to a diskette but the library shall not be responsible for damage to any patron's diskette or computer, or for any loss of data. The Library shall not be responsible for the use of any down loaded data which is in violation of any local, state or federal law.

7) There is a charge of fifteen (.15) cents per page for using Library printers even if the patron uses her/his own paper. The charge covers not only the cost of paper but the expense of computer upkeep and related supplies.

The following are specifically prohibited:

1) Using the Library's Internet access equipment for illegal purposes or to send, receive or display obscene or pornographic text, video or graphics.

2) Attaching personal hardware or accessories;
3) Changing software configurations or settings on Library computers;

4) Saving files to the hard disk drive;

5) Careless or destructive use of the equipment, including but not limited to, unplugging, turning off, moving and reconfiguring the hardware.

Summary: Internet access is provided by the Library as a benefit for its patrons; use of these resources should not be construed as a personal right without limitations. Use shall be governed by the above policy and rules and any others that the Board of Directors may, from time to time, deem appropriate. Violations may result in the loss of Internet and other Library access privileges.  | top |

By signing up to use the Library's Internet computers each patron is agreeing to abide by the Library's established policy and rules governing such use. Copies of the Library's policy are available at the circulation and reference desks and in other locations throughout the Library.
