Joseph E. Garland
The late author, historian, and former newspaperman, Joseph E. Garland wrote thirteen books about Gloucester and Boston's North Shore, as well as some 350 columns in the Gloucester Daily Times.
Signed copies of Lone Voyager, the unabridged audiobook, read by author Joseph E. Garland, are available to purchase at the Sawyer Free Library. This is a rare opportunity to acquire a fine recording of Garland's historic fishing tale, with a bonus DVD author interview.

Adrift in the storm in an open dory, Tom Welch died from exposure, leaving Howard Blackburn to fight the
seas alone. With grim determination, Blackburn rowed for five days, without food or water, his hands frozen to
the oars. After sixty-odd miles, he reached the coast of Newfoundland. Thus began a life filled with challenges
and amazing feats on both land and sea.
In 2007, Lone Voyager was the premier book chosen for Gloucester Reads, the community reading program sponsored by the Gloucester Lyceum and Sawyer Free Library. Read by more than1,000 participants,
Lone Voyager was at the center of school workshops and discussion groups; dance, musical, theatrical, and photographic presentations, as well as other cultural events.
Joe Garland’s reading of Lone Voyager breathes new life into the saga of Howard Blackburn. Lightly peppered
with humor and commentary, this is Garland’s gift to the city he loved, and a hero he admired.
